As someone who hasn’t moved often, my room decor has been pretty stagnant, left the way my parents have furnished them years ago. Thus, when I settled into a new apartment for college, I moved in with high eagerness and ambition to make my room look the best. However, I quickly realized this would not be easy, and this was the same for my housemates as well.

Moving is hard and making your room look like the “dream room” isn’t easy.

Introducing Feather

Feather is a furniture and home decor rental service where users can rent items listed on their site for a 1 month, 3 month, or 12 month lease.

How to use Feather

Feather hopes to make the furnishing experience convenient, so I wanted to see if they could solve the disparity between my ideal versus real room. And to do this, I asked a few friends who were struggling with the same question—’why is it so hard to make our rooms look nice?’

🔍 Research

What are current students’ experiences with furnishing?

I asked 3 friends about their experiences moving into and furnishing their apartments. Here, I focused on current college students as Feather’s service especially appeals to those living in short-term residences.

Some insights were:

Purchasing nice furniture is too big of a commitment because (1) it’s expensive and (2) will only be used for a short-period of time.
Looking at furnished rooms is fun and easy, but furnishing an empty room is intimidating— it’s difficult to know where to start.
It’s hard to visualize what the furniture will look like altogether, not only space-wise but style-wise too.
